Area 20 2009 competition entries
To enter teams we have to provide helpers for all events; this has proved difficult in the past. To compete in an area 20 event you must either provide a named helper for the day or commit to help yourself at another area 20 competition. The nomination must be done when you enter. If you withdraw at the last moment you will still be expected to provide the helper or attend yourself. We hope you agree this is a fair system & that you will continue to support the club.
Flu vaccinations- You need an up to date vaccination record to compete in area 20 competitions. This will be checked by the chef dequipe before the competition & by the area 20 officials at the competition. Remember you should carry a copy of your horses passport when you travel your horse.

Area 20 Horse Trials Qualifier, Kelsall Hill, 26th June 2010
14 members were entered at Kelsall Hill this year - 2 senior novice teams, 1 senior intermediate team and 3 junior individuals.
The 2 junior novices, Poppy Burgess and Bethan Phillips competed individually and both finished well with Poppy taking our only placing, 2 nd, and we wait to hear from BRC Stoneleigh whether she will have qualified for the championships at Aston-Le-Walls in August.
The 2 senior novice teams had mixed fortunes. The team of 4, Kathy Calderbank, Clare Harrison, Jane Byrne and Caroline Phillips all completed well but were unplaced, despite Caroline riding a new horse and Kathy and Clare being drafted in late as replacements. The standard must have been very high this year!
The other senior novice team went from 4 to 2 members when one got the wrong day and the second decided the course was too stiff for a novice horse. Anne Boothroyd deserved to be placed with a score of 48.9 penalties but just missed out. Carrie Childs completed and was pleased with her novice mare’s performance.
The senior intermediate team had only three competitors but lost 1 on the day, due to a flu booster given less than 7 days before the competition. Fran McNicol had a very good day finishing on her dressage score plus 2.8 speeding penalties for going too fast, sadly unplaced! Sophie Meredith was going to withdraw as her horse was lame but was put on the Chairman’s 17hds lunatic horse, and did a great job, going clear cross country (not bad as she only sat on her for the first time a couple of days before).
Grateful thanks go to all the helpers who ran the cross country (start, tack check and timing) and spent hours in the stuffy scorers’ tent on a very hot day, most of them were doing their ‘Area duty’ but many were helpers who do more than their fair share because they enjoy doing it.
Area 20 Show Jumping Championship Qualifier 20 June 2010 Middlewich
The following teams and individuals competed this year and the take up was rather disappointing compared to previous years and as last year we only had one junior individual. Where have all our show jumpers gone? We were also beset with problems such as various withdrawals, vaccination certificates being forgotten and helpers dropping out but everyone that competed enjoyed the day and the sun shone on us.
Junior Open : Ellie Ebbit came second after the jump off
Senior Novice: Jane Byrne, Carrie Childs, Kim Lee and Sue Pym did well but were unplaced
Senior Intermediate : Jo Ellis, Alison Ardern and Becky Brougham did very well as only a team of 3 and came 6 th after a cracking jump off
Senior Style: Jo Ellis, Becky Brougham, Carrie Childs and Jane Byrne came 3rd. Many thanks to everyone who supported and helped out on the day as checking vaccinations and parking vehicles isn’t the most exiting job but hopefully we won’t have to do that again for a little while!
Delamere Teams Triumph in BRC Team Endurance Event, 22nd May 2010
The Riding Club Team Endurance Event is a (re) launched competition jointly supported by BRC and Endurance GB. It is open to teams of 3 or 4 riders from all affiliated Riding Clubs. Teams enter an Endurance Qualifier at an Endurance GB Ride and have to complete a course of between 30 and 35km (approximately 20 miles) at a speed between 8kph and 15kph. Our local qualifier was at Kelsall, over a 32km route which used the Kelsall farm ride, Primrose Wood, down through Tirley Garth and over to Old Pale in the main Delamere Forest…and back again! Delamere fielded two teams as follows:
Horse team: Kathy Calderbank on Ben, Jo Ellis on Devon, Jenny German on Duke, Clare Harrison on Trig. Pony team: Tim Deeprose on Mufasa, Katie Monton (Junior rider) on Chant, Jane Stewart on Jim.
The only equine that had done endurance before was fat Chant (hidden underneath that layer of blubber is an advanced grade endurance pony) and the only rider with experience was Jane, who organised pre-ride briefings for the enthusiastic squad. The day of the ride was a real scorcher which meant that the horses were going to struggle to stay cool and hydrated in the heat. There was a hiccup at the beginning when Ben refused to let the vet check his heart rate which meant that he could not ride competitively as part of the team but Kathy was allowed to start the ride as a non-competitor. Kathy’s bad luck continued when Ben went lame on course and was retired. However, with the help of crews at checkpoints armed with “slosh” bottles and sound judgement on speed and distance, all the other Delamere riders completed successfully and all the horses passed the final vet inspection.
Due to pre-ride injuries and withdrawals, there were only 3 RC teams in the competition. The Delamere Pony team finished 1 st, Delamere Horse team 2 nd and East Cheshire Combined Training group were 3rd which means Delamere qualifies for the finals in September at Southwell Racecourse. The pony team had a speed of 11.03kph, Jo and Jenny had 10.67kph and Claire had an impressive 10.05 (given all the walking in the middle when Kathy's horse went lame and Clare stayed with her until they reached a checkpoint). It was a great day out. Everyone finished with a sense of achievement – and pride in our horses who worked so hard in the heat. All we need to do now is keep them all fit for the Finals in September!
DFRC committee extend a massive vote of thanks to Jane for all her hard work organising this and well done to all concerned.
Area 20 Festival of the Hunter Challenge October Llanymynech
This qualifier for the Championships to be held at Aston le Walls in early June 2010 was held on 4 October 2009 at Llanymynech on a lovely warm day. It was the first time the new format had been used at an Area competition and consisted of seven show jumps over a fairly twisty course and then straight out onto a shortened XC Phase. We entered two juniors, Kate Wright who came fifth in the Novice and Ellie Ebbit who did brilliantly to win the Open and has qualified for the championships. We entered one Senior Novice team, Judith Childs, Ann Boothroyd, Sophie Meredith and Jane Byrne who did really well and finished second and should also have qualified for the championships due to the number of teams. Sophie and Judith narrowly missed an individual placing. Carolyn Banner also did very well as an individual jumping clear in the Novice with Cathy London’s Tuesday and also just missed out on the placings. Sadly our senior open team diminished from four to just Caroline Childs and Fran McNichol who were unplaced. For the first time we had a pairs team, Judith and Caroline Childs who had a brave try but had some brake and steering problems at the dressing fence where you are marked for jumping side by side which isn’t an easy task, especially when the horses have already done one round! Many thanks to all those who helped and supported on the day.
